Lara was born in January of 2022, into a household infected with Covid. Both my wife and I had caught it only days before her birth and it was inevitable she would contract it. Omicron was circulating and I suspect that was what we had contracted. At a week old, I could see she was struggling and took her in to our A&E, suspecting the worst. A few hours later she was admitted to an isolation ward, where she would spend the next ten days.

I could see the doctors were at a loss in terms of treatment protocols for the young infants in the ward. The gold standard at that stage was to pump the infant full of antibiotics and hope for the best. I refused the treatment, arguing she was not febrile and that she should be monitored rather than medicated. Ignoring my request, they pressed ahead and she spent the next seven days on a drip.

She was discharged after a week, her little system somehow had managed to fend off the virus without any ill effects. My wife was overjoyed, but I harbored concerns and I still do. There is absolutely no research done on young infants and the long term impact of the virus on their systems. Babies are notoriously difficult to treat and even harder to enroll in any form of meaningful trial. This results is a wait and see scenario, which, if you’re the parent, is far from ideal.

She’s made it, almost uneventfully – aside from a few minor incidents, mostly involving the cat and her desire to separate it from it’s tail – to her first birthday and first steps and on the surface, all appears well. It’s the rest of her journey that concerns me, and it’s a concern all new parents should share, post Covid.

We cannot unsee the last three years

Particularly if you’ve been invested in the saga of Covid, and I have, writing copiously on the pandemic, the lockdowns, masks, mandates and then, the vaccines. We’ve seen both the best of healthcare (in terms of dedicated doctors and nurses tirelessly running the gauntlet) and the worst. We’ve been lied to, locked down, manipulated, terrified and then coerced, sometimes at gunpoint, into rushed vaccines and experimental medical technology.

Now, we have to witness the last act of the Covid saga, of a triumvirate not even Shakespeare could have envisaged. The lead players, science, politics and medicine, trying to extend their flawed narrative just that little bit longer, and to play out their final scene they’ve conscripted our children. We are living out the vaccines swan song and they’re singing it to our babies.

There is some benefit for some children, those for whom the risk of the vaccine is outweighed by their medical conditions or predisposition to developing serious Covid symptoms. For most other children, Covid is not life threatening. There is simply no logical reason to expose them to the risks of a growing number of serious adverse events linked to the mRNA vaccines, some of which prove fatal.

There is not one shred of serious, robust clinical evidence to support the CDC’s Covid vaccination campaign for children.

Given what I know and what I’ve witnessed over the last three years, I now face a conundrum as a parent. One that I am certain many other parents also face. How can we ever again trust public health, and the science that drives it. As the person responsible for ensuring my baby daughters wellbeing, I now have to weigh up the risks (often unquantifiable) of each medical intervention she is exposed to, before consenting to it. I know that in many instances I will now decline these interventions.

Is the reputation of the vaccine irreparably damaged?

It may very well be in the minds of many parents, as evidenced by diseases we had once eradicated, making a slow and determined return. Small outbreaks of measles, polio and other childhood ailments are telling signs of our distrust in a system that is supposed to protect us, and which, under ideal conditions, does.

mRNA has issues, perhaps not the actual idea, but the particles we use to deliver the enveloped instruction in, the production, which exposes the vaccines to impurities with E.coli present in a number of tested samples, and then of course, the fact that the products don’t perform as advertised. The body does not, in some individuals and for reasons unknown, stop producing the protein the vaccine instructs, as we’d been assured. There are numerous other issues, to complex for this article and therein lies the rub.

Much of what is currently under development in terms of cutting edge medicine blithely assumes we’ve got mRNA all figured out, when truth be told, we are still stumbling to understand all the subtle nuances of the technology. Vaccines, flu shots, cancer treatments and other rare diseases will, in the future, all be delivered with mRNA technology.

My young daughter now faces medical choices that didn’t exist, pre-Covid. Am I going to expose her to these new treatments. Absolutely not. I will wait, as should responsible science, to see what emerges from our global clinical trial involving nearly two thirds of the worlds population. I pray I am wrong, but emerging evidence suggests otherwise.

In the meanwhile, old fashioned polio drops and measles, mumps and rubella vaccines will have to suffice.

Medika Life stands for objective science and exchange – proper critical science undertaken with the goal of improving lives. By that, I refer to sound critical science undertaken to improve lives, science that is open to criticism and uncensored peer review. Cautious science, designed to protect and save lives – to do no harm. A path that science currently, under the duress of politics and profit, has forsaken. Sometimes, science cannot be – should not be – rushed.

Take vaccines as an example, life-saving routine treatments critical to the safety of our children and treatments we would administer with little thought to safety. During the last two years, the “labeled” Covid vaccines have damaged the credibility of what vaccines are in many people’s minds – therapies that prevent disease and its transmission. Credibility that had taken generations to build. Ironic if you consider that the Covid products were nothing more than the equivalent of the flu jab and never a vaccine.

Each article in the coming weeks will examine a range of issues based on real hard data and facts, including the validity of the treatments (vaccines), mRNA technology, lockdowns and masks, virus origins, the actual reality of Long Covid – is it the result of long-term damage from the virus, reaction to the virus combined with the vaccine or another clinical pathway. What of people who have survived the so-called “Sudden Death” syndrome and more?

In late March of 2021, I wrote an article that highlighted the problems with Vanden Bossche’s theories (there are numerous) about the runaway evolution of the coronavirus if we continue with widespread vaccination. My article debunked numerous points, for instance, an immunology faux-pas he made that would make a first-year immunology student cringe in shame(he shows a dendritic cell activating an NK cell via antigen presentation) and more. This article won’t deal with his erroneous claims, we’ve done that already, but rather seek to examine how a literal nobody in the world of science has managed to propel himself to stardom (albeit notorious) in the space of a few weeks on the back of a clearly flawed paper, intentionally withheld from the peer review process for obvious reasons. Vanden Bossche isn’t out to save the world, he’s out to fleece it. Academia doesn’t pay enough.

Vanden Bossche, the marketing monster

In a self-marketing feat that would have left the likes of Apple and Samsung spinning their wheels in his dust, Geert Vanden Bossche has managed to create an iconic brand literally overnight. He portrays the image of a gentle, yet friendly and always reasonable scatterbrained professor. His hair is always a little unkept, a tip of the hat to his rebellious, but carefully controlled nature and his meticulously managed public persona just yells “trust me, I’m a doctor”.

And people apparently do, buying into both his image and his version of science. By the millions. Americans love him and well they should, given their established proclivity for drama, conspiracy, and anti-establishment propaganda. Canada follows hotly on their heels. Vanden Bossche has human nature on his side and is well aware of it. Everything he does, the language he uses, and the way he presents both himself and his theories, suggest he is all too well aware.

If he’d published his paper, created a furor, and then disappeared back into the academic obscurity from whence he came, we may even have credited him with possibly believing in the work he had published, flawed though it is. BUT HE HAS’NT. and that speaks volumes. It raises serious questions about the man, his motivation, and his plans for book deals, speaking appearances, and perhaps, dare he dream it, a movie offer. I can see the title now, “The Virologist that broke American Healthcare”.

Remember, just in case you’re tempted to confuse Vanden Bossche with a world-class microbiologist/virologist, he is actually board certified in Veterinary Virology, Microbiology, and Animal Hygiene, hasn’t published a research paper since 1995, and appears to have forgotten the basic activation mechanisms for an NK cell. But he’s not letting these minor obstacles stand in his way.

Lo and behold, what should pop out of the digital ether this March but none other than Geert Vanden Bossche. His domain, geertvandenbossche.com was registered on the 14th of March 2021. Suddenly, and very coincidentally, his sudden interest to develop a website coincided with the release of his controversial “paper”. What follows is nothing short of spectacular and his epically flawed “scientific” dissection of mass vaccination pales in comparison.

From Zero to Anti-Hero in the blink of an eye. Vanden Bossche has managed to propel his previously non-existent website from total obscurity, 0 out 30 million websites to an Alexa ranking globally of 454,315. Even more impressive is the time scale. In less than two months, he now boasts being the 129,013 most read website in the US and in Canada, that figure shoots up to 32,015. Apparently, the only people who are bigger suckers than the Americans for a good Covid conspiracy are the Canadians.

To put the achievement below into proper context, he has skipped right past 29 646 000 other websites to achieve his current ranking, such is the volume of traffic he currently enjoys, traffic that mostly originates from Northern America.

Want to know where his traffic specifically comes from? Available statistics show Google sending him 31% of his traffic and Twitter accounts for 14.3%. Where do his visitors primarily go after spending an average of 1 minute 27 seconds on the site? Youtube, of course, 21.2% of his visitors head straight for his videos. The rest of his traffic, which equates to millions of views daily, isn’t available, isn’t analyzable, that how recent his success has been. Most platforms need at least three months of data to generate figures.

We have a pretty good idea where the other traffic is coming from though, having run a few backlink checks on his domain. Almost every single anti-vaxx website, alternate health website, covid conspiracy website, and even radical, Republican funded qanon styled sites have adopted Vanden Bossche, propelling him overnight to international digital stardom and enabling (which is their actual goal) the dissemination of his divisive articles and videos to a large audience. They believe they’re using Vanden Bossche to further their own agendas.

I suspect exactly the opposite is true. I think, and I’m not alone in this assumption, that Vanden Bossche has an ulterior motive and its financial. As we’ve already stated, he is intelligent and driven, but not by an altruistic desire to save his fellow man from the impending vaccine catastrophe he has prophesized.

Rather, it is to sell the world an alternative vaccine, designed and developed by none other than Vanden Bossche himself.

If you think this is a ridiculous proposition, we suggest your read up on the disgraced Andrew Wakefield, the king of the vaccine con and arguably the founder of the anti-vaxx movement. Ironic that both mens’ attempts to enrich themselves have led to a slavelike following of individuals apparently devoid of independent thought. In fact, Wakefield may very well have provided a blueprint for Vanden Bossche’s scam, the two appear similar.

The Fool-Proof Con

Vanden Bossche has created the ultimate medical con, one that is sufficiently complex to prevent his victims (the general public) from understanding it and they are therefore dependant on accepting his individual and professional credentials which on the surface appear beyond reproach. Vanden Bossche maintains an air of absolute conviction and professional dependability throughout, selling himself and by association, his ideas.

It would have been possible for him to explain his concept in far simpler terms, but it’s noticeable that these simpler phrases are retained for the shock statements, the warnings, and the “dire consequences”. The paper he created was never intended for professional dissemination and would have been ripped to pieces by his colleagues. It was designed entirely for you, dear reader. for the general public, to flummox and confuse, and judging by the interest he has generated, it’s been a spectacular success.

When it comes to this kind of work, never trust the man, trust the science. And science has proven him to be an incontrovertible fake.

Time is fleeting

And Vanden Bossche has a limited supply of it. In another six -12 months, the glaring flaws in his arguments are going to become apparent as the world does not succumb to his predicted supervirus. Also, his new conspiracy fans are a fickle mob, driven by whatever is trending on social media. In two months’ time, he’s going to be old news and it may very well be this aspect that has prompted America to do almost nothing to counteract his wild claims.

The statistics shown above indicate just how mistaken the American approach to Vanden Bossch has been. Since early April and probably well into June, he will continue to spread disinformation and distrust in the vaccines at an unprecedented rate, encouraging millions to reconsider getting vaccinated and contributing to the American failure to reach herd level immunization. Of course, Vanden Bossche can’t be credited with single-handedly contributing to America’s vaccine hesitancy.

There has been a continuous and sustained attack on vaccines almost since the idea for rapid vaccine development was first floated in early 2020. What we do know is that Vanden Bossche offer s a unique opportunity to study this model of medical quackery that is driven by greed and personal enrichment. His website and strategy show just how vulnerable international medical strategies can be to a concerted and well-supported propaganda attack.

America is about to discover just how much money they are going to have to fork out to try and undo the impact of one, Geert Vanden Bossche. Money that could have spent on healthcare, saving lives. Ensuring a mother from a disadvantaged community received enough pre-delivery care to save her and her child. Somehow, I doubt Vanden Bossche has trouble falling asleep at night. He just doesn’t seem the type.

Whoever is tasking with holding these quacks and con-artists accountable in a post-pandemic society (people will demand it), may not view him as kindly. He has blood on his hands and his words and advice continue to claim lives.

I spent some time snooping the Facebook comment sections and pages sporting vaccine misunderstanding, misinformation, and myths. Here are some of the most common myths and the reasons why you shouldn’t believe them.

I GOT THE FLU VACCINE AND GOT THE FLU FROM IT!

No you didn’t. The flu vaccine does not contain the live flu virus and you cannot get the flu from it. Ever. Period. What may be happening to people is they have an immune reaction (which means the vaccine is working) to the shot and are showing minor symptoms such as redness or soreness at the injection site, fever, aches and pains. This is not the flu. It is also possible that people are literally sick with something (another virus like the common cold, perhaps) and it just so happens to coincide with the time they get a vaccine – in their minds the vaccine caused the sickness.

I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN THE VACCINE (FOR ANYTHING) AND HAVEN’T BEEN SICK.

Lucky you! Most people get sick at some point in their lives. The flu, COVID, measles, whatever it might be, you’re not only more likely to get sick without the protection from the vaccine, but you are more likely to spread it to others – like the sweet elderly gentleman across the street, or the newborn baby who hasn’t received their full vaccine schedule yet. They may not be so lucky as to never get sick.

MANY VACCINES CONTAIN CHEMICALS AND TOXIC INGREDIENTS.

This is actually kind of true, but it’s not bad. First, everything is chemicals – water is a chemical called Dihydrogen Monoxide – you are chemicals, I am chemicals, the air is a chemical. Secondly, everything is technically toxic. All chemicals (which is everything) is toxic at certain doses. So, yes, water is toxic if you drink too much. Vaccines do contain ingredients such as arsenic and formaldehyde – those are in fact toxic at the right dose. The amount of these chemicals (or any chemical) in a single dose of a vaccine isn’t enough to be toxic. A person actually eats more arsenic in an apple or more formaldehyde in a pear than they would get from a vaccine dose. Remember, when it comes to chemicals – nothing is ever “chemical-free”, and it’s not the chemical that is dangerous, it’s the dose. Trust the science and the chemists who know each chemical and at which dose it is harmful.

NATURAL IMMUNITY IS BETTER THAN A VACCINE.

No. Natural immunity to many common, dangerous illness that are typically mitigated through vaccination is not something you want. Becoming naturally immune to measles means you may have to live with infertility. Natural immunity to COVID, may mean you live with neurological or cardiovascular disadvantages the rest of your life. Natural immunity to chicken pox may mean you suffer from Shingles when you’re an adult. Natural immunity to polio may mean you no longer have the use of your legs. This natural immunity also means that while you’re sick, you’re spreading a dangerous disease to your friends, family, and community. Vaccines help you build immunity without risking life.

VACCINES CAUSE AUTISM.

I can’t believe this is still around. Millions of dollars have been spent debunking this doozy. There is unequivocally zero evidence (and hundreds of studies) that prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that autism is not caused by vaccination. Unfortunately, many well-liked celebrities profited from these statements. The physician who originally made the claim no longer has a medical license.

When it comes to vaccination, leave the research to the professionals (you know, those people who have spent their whole careers studying vaccines and contagious diseases) and stay out of the comment section. If you have concerns or questions about vaccines, always reach out to a medical professional. What is infant immunization?

Immunizations are also called vaccines. From the time a baby is born through their first 15 months, they will receive many vaccines, which will protect your baby from getting sick with diseases and illnesses that can make them very ill, cause life-long health issues, or cause death.

Because most people are now vaccinated and most people chose to vaccinate their children, we forget how life was before vaccines — when debilitating childhood illnesses caused severe complications or death almost every day. Today’s children get more shots than previous generations — this is good thing! It means our children are better protected from more than we were (or our parents). Gone are the days of chicken pox, polio, and mumps!

Vaccines work many ways, depending on the vaccine, but all of them are meant to keep your baby safe. The benefits of vaccines far outweigh any possible side-effects.

Children will receive vaccines from birth until 18 months, and are given boosters in throughout childhood from ages 4–6, and again at 11 years.

What is the infant immunization schedule?

The current vaccine schedule has been created by the CDC. It is important to stick to this schedule. Information on the internet or from your friends and family about “alternative” vaccine schedules may be well-intended, but it’s not a schedule or a plan that has been tested. Providers and medical offices which support untested, “alternative” vaccines schedules are not practicing evidence-based medicine.

• Going against the CDC’s vaccine schedule is risky and can cause harm to your baby (which we would never want!). Here is why:
• The “alternative” schedule has NOT been tested. The clinical trials and research studies that should bring confidence are swapped with schedules that have no evidence for success or safety.
• Delaying certain vaccines increase risks for infection because your baby hasn’t built up the proper immunity — meaning every play date, trip to the grocery store, or kiss from grandma is a risk.
• While there is NO data to support “alternative” vaccine schedules, there IS data to support that delaying or slowing vaccination increases the risk of some types of seizures after vaccination.

There is only benefit

There is no benefit to delaying vaccines or opting for an untested schedule. There is only risk. It is important to talk to your child’s medical provider if you’re considering an “alternative” schedule. Pediatricians will take the time to explain each vaccine your child receives, answer any questions you may have, and assure you that you are making the best decision to protect your child. After all, there is nothing more important to you than your child, and making sure they are safe from anything that could harm them.

The New Orleans bar partnered with Crescent Care to bring the Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 vaccine straight to the people in a true New Orleans style for the event held on April 9. While the DJs provided live music, Qween Amor, a licensed EMT and transgender activist, administered the life-saving single-dose Janssen/Johnson and Johnson vaccines. Nola.com reported 125 residents received their vaccine thanks to the program.

Crescent Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center servicing the Greater New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana community. The group has a long history of community activism, going back to its founding in 1983. In response to the early HIV pandemic in the city, the NO/AIDS Task Force provided care to the LGBTQ and underserved communities. Over the past three decades, Crescent Care expanded its services to provided comprehensive care to those who need it.

To help fight vaccine inequities, Crescent Care has planned a series of vaccination community outreach events throughout New Orleans. This April 9 event was the first in a series to help get more shots in more arms. Like many US cities, New Orleans is working to overcome vaccine hesitancy and improve vaccine acceptance among people of color.

The Dragon’s Den is not the only private company finding creative ways to promote vaccination to help us reopen safely. Krispy Kreme announced a national public health campaign offering a free Orginal Glazed doughnut to anyone who shows a valid COVID-19 vaccination card. Dollar General, Aldi, and Trader Joe’s encourage employee vaccination by offering up to four hours of paid time to get vaccinated.

Every day more companies announce creative ways to help encourage widespread vaccination to help us reach herd immunity. Herd immunity occurs when enough people in a community are protected, making it hard for a virus to spread from person to person.

Many believe marketplace solutions, not government actions, can help the United States reach the necessary immunity level for us to get our lives back to normal. Private industry can be an essential driving force to incentivize the public to sign up for Covid-19 vaccines. Public events like the Crescent Health Shot for Shot program increase awareness and generate public interest in vaccination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Janssen/Johnson and Johnson Covid-19 Vaccine under emergency use authorization (EUA) on February 27. It only requires a single dose to be effective and is not burdened by the cold storage requirements, which slowed the distribution of the two previously approved vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer. This vaccine can be mass-produced and widely distributed.

Like the messenger RNA Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, the Johnson and Johnson vaccine does not contain a live virus. One cannot catch Covid-19 from these vaccines.

Forty-four thousand people participated in Johnson and Johnson safety and efficacy clinical trials in the United States, South Africa, and Latin America.

The Johnson and Johnson’s/Janssen vaccine offers 72% protection against infection and 86% against severe disease. The Johnson and Johnson vaccine uses Adenovirus 26 (AD26) as the vector to deliver DNA material into our cells to provoke an immune response. Adenoviruses are the group of viruses causing the common cold. These viruses can be genetically altered to maintain their efficient ability to get into our bodies but remove their ability to make us sick.

Everyone in the US is ready for a return to normal. Widespread vaccination is how we get there. If a Krispy Kreme donut, or in New Orleans, a free watermelon lemon drop shot, serves as motivation, then pass the shots around.

The world is fighting two pandemics: Covid-19 and misinformation. Dangerous social media rumors and falsehoods continue to circulate, creating fear and mistrust among the general public. This week, the misinformation focused on a false link between Covid-19 vaccination and miscarriage.

The baseless claims started after anti-vaxxers misleadingly shared posts from a popular Oklahoma OB-GYN physician. Michelle Rockwell, MD, publicly shared the tragedy of her miscarriage through her social media platforms. She also celebrated her Covid-19 vaccination three weeks later. Conspiracy theorists disregarded the timeline, took her Instagram posts out of context, and spread falsehood regarding the timing of her vaccination and pregnancy loss.  

Facebook also removed a false post claiming that the head of Pfizer research found a link between the vaccine and female sterilization. This particular false claim is based on a confusing twist of scientific facts.

The Covid-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna use messenger RNA (mRNA). A single strand of mRNA delivers instructions to human cells to produce an antibody against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The conspiracy theory that Facebook addressed stems from the fact that the spike protein is genetically similar to an essential placental protein called syncytin-1.

The placenta is the organ inside the uterus that keeps the baby alive through its internal filtration system. Syncytin-1 and the coronavirus spike protein share a tiny string of amino acids, but the placental protein is unrelated to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The genetic similarity is not close enough for vaccine antibodies to recognize syncytin-1.

These fabrications prompted a statement on February 4 by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) titled “Medical Experts Continue to Assert That Covid Vaccines Do Not Impact Fertility.”

Leaders from the U.K. spoke up about the viral misinformation. The president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Edward Morris, MD, issued guidance in January to reassure the public, stating, “There is​ ​no biologically plausible mechanism by which current vaccines would cause any impact on fertility.”

Neither the Moderna nor Pfizer vaccine contains a live virus. One cannot catch Covid-19 from the vaccine. Pregnant patients can rest assured mRNA vaccines do not cause fetal genetic changes. The mRNA vaccines do not enter our cells’ nucleus and do not alter vaccine recipients’ DNA. 

Much remains unknown about the novel coronavirus’s effects on pregnant women, babies, and Covid-19 vaccination in pregnancy. Research indicates most pregnant people who contract Covid-19 do well but have an increased risk of ICU admission and preterm labor.

Based on the known risks of Covid-19 infection in pregnancy, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advocates offering vaccination to pregnant and lactating people.

More than 3.7 million individuals give birth in the United States per year. Excluding pregnant patients from vaccine eligibility or scaring them away with false information creates a significant risk for moms and babies.

World renown vaccine specialist, Geert Vanden Bossche, gave a groundbreaking interview this week risking his reputation and his career by bravely speaking out against administration of #Covid19 vaccines. In what may be one of the most important stories ever covered by The Highwire, the vaccine developer shared his extreme concerns about these vaccines in particular and why we may be on track to creating a global immunity catastrophe.

We aren’t going to bother linking to the “brave, reputation-risking” Vanden Bossche article. If you want to waste your time reading it, you can always find it on his 12-day old Twitter account, if it hasn’t been suspended by now, or on one of the many channels promoting anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theories, just scroll down to A for Alien-Abductions and Anti-Vaxxers.

Vanden Bossche has gone to great lengths to explain to us in his opening statement that he is definitely not anti-vaccine. No sir, not in a month of Sundays. Not little old me. Our response? Thou doth protest too much. Here’s an exert of just how much he in fact protests.

I am all but an antivaxxer. As a scientist I do not usually appeal to any platform of this kind to make a stand on vaccine-related topics. As a dedicated virologist and vaccine expert I only make an exception when health authorities allow vaccines to be administered in ways that threaten public health, most certainly when scientific evidence is being ignored. The present extremely critical situation forces me to spread this emergency call. As the unprecedented extent of human intervention in the Covid-19- pandemic is now at risk of resulting in a global catastrophe without equal, this call cannot sound loudly and strongly enough.

As stated, I am not against vaccination. On the contrary, I can assure you that each of the current vaccines have been designed, developed and manufactured by brilliant and competent scientists. However, this type of prophylactic vaccines are completely inappropriate, and even highly dangerous, when used in mass vaccination campaigns during a viral pandemic. Vaccinologists, scientists and clinicians are blinded by the positive short-term effects in individual patents, but don’t seem to bother about the disastrous consequences for global health. Unless I am scientifically proven wrong, it is difficult to understand how current human interventions will prevent circulating variants from turning into a wild monster.

Racing against the clock, I am completing my scientfic manuscript, the publication of which is, unfortunately, likely to come too late given the ever increasing threat from rapidly spreading, highly infectious variants. This is why I decided to already post a summary of my findings as well as my keynote speech at the recent Vaccine Summit in Ohio on LinkedIn. Last Monday, I provided international health organizations, including the WHO, with my analysis of the current pandemic as based on scientifically informed insights in the immune biology of Covid-19.

Sadly for Vanden Bossche, this is an all too familiar tactic employed by almost every single critic of the covid vaccine and laughably, even some anti-vaxxers. In fact, his whole concept looks and sounds suspiciously plagiarized. Perhaps Dr.Hooman Noorchashm might consider legal action if he doesn’t have his hands too full right now.

Take these points raised by David Gorski on his blog, in an article that thoroughly eviscerates our European “expert”.

Like Dr. Noorchashm, Dr. Vanden Bossche has not published his concerns in the scientific literature. Like Dr. Noorchashm, Dr. Vanden Bossche bases his concerns not on data, but theoretical “basic science” concerns about immunology. Like Dr. Noorchashm, Dr. Vanden Bossche has sounded his “warning” to various health authorities. Like Dr. Noorchashm, Dr. Vanden Bossche has taken to social media to air his concerns, and his message has been enthusiastically embraced by anti-vaxxers:

Vanden Bossche has published a scant amount of work, and tellingly he chooses predatory publishers like Longdom, owner of the Journal of Vaccines & Vaccination. It’s a dubious publication at best and is listed as predatory on Beals List. Longdom Publishing enjoys no credibility as a medical publisher, and articles are not peer-reviewed or exposed to scrutiny. 

Why not choose recognized and peer-reviewed journals to publish into? Well, if the work you’re publishing is dubious, not based on evidence but rather wild conjecture you’ve formulated in your own mind and not scientifically tested in the real world, well then Predatory publications are the way to go, followed by the hugely reliable, science-based platform of social media and the anti-vaxxer vlog circuit.

Here is an open question to Vanden Bossche. If you’re so eager not to be perceived as an anti-vaxxer why have you climbed into bed with them, why do you align yourself with people like Bigtree, Wakefield, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jnr, who actively seek to undermine the science of vaccines? I’m really interested to know? Are they simply using you and you’re too stupid to see it or was their bus the only one that stopped to pick you up? I suspect the latter.

I’ve decided to opt for a different approach on this article and will, instead of trying to disassemble the fictional ramblings of Vanden Bossche, allow others, more knowledgable in the field, to step into the breach. Many experts (real ones) have already taken the article to pieces, explaining in scientific (real science) terms why Vanden Bossche is deluded. 

There another reason for this approach. Vanden Bossche bases his claims on well-established and accepted vaccine science. He is intimately familiar with his topic and if you wish to understand exactly why his statements and warnings are completely fanciful, you will need a far more detailed explanation than we are able to provide here. Fortunately, very qualified individuals have stepped forward and provided exact and specific deconstructions of his fanciful theories. Here then, in no particular order

Dr. Zubin Damania provides a fantastic video with a simplified explanation of why Vanden Bossche is wrong. If you’re not that technically inclined, this video will provide a far clearer understanding than the articles listed below which focus on the specifics of vaccines.

The final word

Is Vanden Bossche merely deluded, or simply misguided in his interpretation of vaccine science. His level of education and experience in the field tend to suggest another agenda, as does his regurgitation of existing vaccine rhetoric, notably those offered by Andrew Wakefield and Hooman Noorchashm. He is rebranding their narratives for his own agenda, but what is that agenda?

Wakefield, if you didn’t know, is the disgraced and disavowed author of a retracted, fraudulent paper on MMR vaccines, supposedly linking autism to the MMR vaccine. Despite the best efforts of many, Wakefield continues to seek the spotlight and frequently pens misleading drivel. He has become one of the roach poster-boys for anti-vaxxers.

On the topic of grift, let’s turn to another article that seeks to expose Vanden Bossche’s not-so-hidden agenda.

In an article published in the Defender, Rosemary Frei, MSc, outlines what she says are “a few of the dozens of clues” suggesting that Bossche’s argument “is a continuation of the overall COVID deception.” There be gold in them thar hills!

There’s abundant evidence that Vanden Bossche has a not-so-hidden agenda. For example, just before the three-minute mark in the video interview of Vanden Bossche by McMillan, Vanden Bossche indicates he’s a long-time vaccine developer. He adds he’s now focusing on vaccines that “educate the immune system in ways that are to some extent more efficient than we do right now with our conventional vaccines.” Clearly he’s got significant conflicts of interest. Therefore he has zero credibility when it comes to advising the public or anyone else about how to avoid negative effects of mass vaccination.

We’ll accord the honors of the closing paragraph to David Gorski, who echoes our sentiments on Vanden Bossche.

You know what? I think that grifters recognize fellow grifters, and Frei recognized that Dr. Vanden Bossche is stoking fear of existing COVID-19 vaccines to produce a sales rationale for his own NK-based vaccine, just as Andrew Wakefield stoked fear of the MMR in order to support his own measles vaccine. Grifters of a feather, and all that, and, of course, grifters gonna grift. Always.

I was sad to see the headline in the LA Times yesterday, but not surprised. A large number of California’s healthcare workers are refusing to get vaccinated against Covid and it’s created an uproar. The article, entitled, Some healthcare workers refuse to take COVID-19 vaccine, even with priority access, has created an uproar and highlights systemic failures within the current government’s vaccine campaign. 

It has also highlighted the ethical dilemmas around vaccination and vaccine safety at a time we can least afford it. Are these healthcare workers within their personal and professional right to refuse the vaccine?

The problem California’s frontline healthcare is highlighting is not a vaccine issue. They trust vaccines. They are almost to a man (women, other) vaccinated and they vaccinate their children. Their problem is one of trust. If the covid vaccine had been touted as a medicine or treatment rather than a vaccine, they would still be refusing it. It’s just hugely unfortunate, at this point in our history, that it happens to be a vaccine. 

I’ve linked to the tweet of the article below to allow you to gauge the public response, which is an overriding one of indignant anger. Should we be upset with these healthcare professionals and do we have the right?

Safety and Obligation

The obvious and most worrying issue posed by their decision not to get vaccinated is the question of safety, not to the nurses and doctors themselves, but to patients, particularly the high-risk sectors of the community. Do the unvaccinated doctors pose a greater risk to patients in terms of transmission of the coronavirus to patients?.

Many elderly patients require constant medical attention for one ailment or another. The same applies to people with known risk vectors, high blood pressure, heart conditions, obesity, etc. Do they now have the right to refuse care from professionals that have chosen not to receive the vaccine? Do patients have a right to be told who has been vaccinated and who hasn’t?

And what of the healthcare workers? Are they not obliged, in the interests of patient safety to take the vaccine. Are they not obliged, as responsible members of the medical community to set an example. 

Perhaps, the most relevant question is this. Why do these science-based professionals not trust the process and assurances given by Pfizer, Moderna, and the FDA regarding the safety of the vaccine? A small percentage of these individuals suffer from the same issues that trouble the public. A lack of reliable information. Conflicting narratives have plagued the war against covid in the US from the outset.

Should we perhaps consider enforcing vaccination for certain public-facing sectors that offer vital services? For example, should vaccination be compulsory for healthcare, policing, and social services, not to mention the politicians?

It’s a complex, ethical nightmare riddled with really complex questions, some of which I have raised above and unfortunately, most of the blame for the current sad state of affairs must be laid squarely at the door of the Republicans and the incumbent President. 

To try and understand the positions of the healthcare workers who, don’t forget, are still risking life and limb, vaccinated or not, let’s try and unpack the individual components that have led us to this point. They will point to why the vaccine itself is actually not the major underlying reason for people’s refusal of it. 

The role of Trump’s toxic America

President Donald Trump’s lasting legacy will be the American divisions he highlighted and fed during his four years in office. He inherited a divided America and he has amplified those divisions for his own gain. 

America has for decades been divided along party lines. It’s been nasty, sometimes unpleasant, and, at times, downright dirty, but there was always a thin veneer of civility and humanity plastered across the festering sore of political division. 

Trump tore away this social bandage and has continued throughout his four-year tenure, to pour poison into the wound, feeding his own agendas at the expense of the American soul. Americans, duly primed, erupted, spurred on by the ever-supportive yes-men of the Republican Party. 

Guilt for the current pandemic response, perhaps better described as a clusterfuck of monumental proportions, is shared equally by all Republican politicians and should be owned accordingly. No political maneuvering by them can obfuscate their complicity in the sea of misinformation and the resulting loss of American lives. Their sad legacy continues to hound the covid vaccine.

Trust was one of the first victims of this remorseless onslaught. Decades of questionable but “sounds iffy, but we’ll give you the benefit of the doubt” believability in the American political system was destroyed overnight. 

It is this absence of trust that lies at the heart of the Californian worker’s refusal to be vaccinated. They no longer trust the system or any players involved in the system that created the vaccine. Read Pfizer, Moderna, the FDA, CDC, HHS, Lightspeed, or any other government agency or associated party. 

Every one of the large Pharma companies was embedded with government agencies over the last few months, all hoping to be the first across the finishing line. Many prominent US politicians, it can be argued, are in the pockets of, or politically beholding to, large pharma. Money and favors have undoubtedly changed hands in the past few months and will continue to do so. 

The FDA and CDC have squandered most of their credibility over the course of the pandemic. Once seen as the bastions of American healthcare and the seat of reliable and trustworthy information and opinion, their voices are now questioned openly and their halcyon days may never return. 

A complete press and social media crackdown on any contrary Covid related material was also seen by many as an attempt to control the narrative and sell an official story. A typical backlash to any form of censorship.

So from a systemic point of view, can you really blame the covid vaccine? It is a victim of circumstance and is viewed by many Americans as a product of a corrupt and unethical Kabal, led by the king of falsehoods and ably supported by his minions. 

Equally, can you blame individuals for questioning the narrative (regarding safety) produced by this Kabal to sell the vaccine to the public? Remember this is the same group that was telling us not to wear masks, that failed to provide any logistical support for healthcare workers early into the pandemic, and that has failed at every turn to effectively combat Covid. They lied for months and continue to do so. 

Why believe them now? Why gamble with your health on a product simply because they assure you it is safe? Any rational debate centered on the covid vaccine issue cannot ignore the fact that this erosion of trust is a key component. Restoring trust is a long and challenging process that requires time, a luxury we currently do not have. So what alternatives are there?

Enforcing Vaccines

Does your Government have the right to enforce vaccination? There are no doubt proponents for this course of action within the US and other governments globally. 

The answer is an emphatic and resounding NO. This would be an egregious violation of your human rights and your freedom to choose. You are not simply a vessel of the state, but an individual with rights and personal freedoms. Additionally, your current vaccination status should in no way impact your life or be used to deny you access to services.

This extends to making any form of employment dependant on taking the vaccine or being vaccinated. The reason is simple and straightforward. There is no scientific data to suggest that vaccinated people will not shed the coronavirus. As far as we know, the vaccinated are still a vector for infections. It’s why we are still advised to wear masks after we’ve been vaccinated. 

Let’s take a closer look at exactly what the vaccine does to your body, so we’re all on the same page. Importantly, to start with, vaccines aren’t an impenetrable shield against viruses. They are simply a tool to enable your body to combat viral intruders more effectively, preventing you from developing a serious reaction to specific viruses.

You can still contract the coronavirus after being vaccinated, the difference is that vaccinated people are far less likely to develop serious illness (covid). Vaccinated people will get flu-like symptoms (or perhaps none) for a few days and then you can get on with your life. A far better alternative to weeks of hospitalization and the very real prospect of death. 

The vaccine isn’t foolproof. Some vaccinated people will still become seriously ill, realistically that figure is probably between 5 and 10% of those who are vaccinated, potentially it could be far fewer. Again, we still lack sufficient data. We don’t have exact numbers and this isn’t proof the vaccine doesn’t work, it simply means it isn’t 100% effective at stopping serious covid infections.

Extrapolate that percentage into the current deaths in the US and your figure drops from over 350 000 dead to between 17 and 35 000 people. That’s a lot of people who could have been around to celebrate 2021 but aren’t, and it’s why the vaccine really matters. 

The accompanying strain on medical resources from a high death toll is also a major issue that impacts patients requiring urgent medical attention for any number of non-covid related conditions. Full hospitals cant offer you a bed when you may desperately need one.

With the very real possibility of another 350 000 Americans dying from covid in 2021 the danger is far from over. The difference now is that we finally do have access to a vaccine, numerous actually. As of now, getting people vaccinated is critical to reducing deaths in the coming months. That is a fact.

Will the Vaccine slow the virus down?

We cannot argue at this point, based on scientific data, that the vaccination will slow the spread of Covid. That is a disingenuous and misleading statement and although it may prove true in the coming months, we just don’t have the data to currently support that statement, so we shouldn’t make it or use it to justify getting vaccinated. The truth is what matters now.

Whatever statements epidemiologists may make at this point regarding the vaccine and transmission, these are conjectural, based on assumptions and modeling that is not yet supported by any existing data. 

Stop persecuting healthcare professionals. NOW. 

This covid vaccine is a personal choice. It always was and always will be. That doctor or nurse who has refused the vaccine because of personal concerns is fully within their rights to do so. They are also within their rights to expect that decision to remain private.

It’s not a choice they’ve made lightly and it doesn’t mean they will stop treating covid patients. They will still expose themselves to the risks, they just choose to rely on their own body’s defense mechanism. It is their choice. 

The covid vaccine doesn’t make them any less capable of treating you and possibly saving your life, at risk to their own. It also, as we have established, doesn’t make them any more or less of a risk for transmitting covid. 

So please stop your persecution of them on social media and in the press. They are putting their lives on the line, not yours, and to be honest, you’re in no position to pass judgment, so stop. 

What we actually know about the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines

The following isn’t lab-based or trial data, but real facts for consideration when you assess the covid vaccine. Hopefully, this will assist you in making your own personal decision. 

• Over 3 million Americans have already been vaccinated against Covid. This excellent resource from the New York Times will keep you up to speed. 
• None of those vaccinated have died whilst receiving the vaccine. It’s given under strict medical supervision and in the very rare event of an anaphylactic (allergic respiratory response) reaction, doctors or nurses are on hand to offer treatments. 
• To my knowledge, and we are a few weeks into the vaccination program, none of those vaccinated have died as a direct result of the vaccine. Those are pretty good odds in favor of a good outcome for you.
• It is far too soon to make assessments about the long-term effects, if any, of the vaccines, but these concerns are limited to younger candidates.

It would appear that both Moderna and Pfizer’s products are safe, based on the above figures. Long term effects aren’t a consideration at this point, particularly for the elderly. Today and tomorrow matter far more than events ten years away when you’re seventy. So if you’re elderly, definitely get vaccinated. If you’re in an at-risk category, get vaccinated. 

We cannot address concerns over long-term safety until the vaccine has been in the marketplace for months and possibly years. The same is true of any drug. Currently, the benefits of vaccination for the aged by far outweigh any undocumented long term risks that may or may not be present in the vaccines.

What about the other covid vaccines?

Slow down, and the FDA should take heed of this warning. You risk jeopardizing the reputation of your two successes by rushing through other EUA’s. There is a strong argument to be offered in terms of more rigorous testing prior to licensing additional vaccines and there is no longer the urgent need. 

We know Pfizer’s and Modena’s vaccines don’t pose a risk, based on actual evidence in the field. Three million is a lot of ‘trial’ subjects. 

Authorizing every new applicant to the market should now be done with far more circumspection and require more rigorous testing to ensure safety.. There is a definite risk involved with a rushed product and just because two companies have succeeded, huge companies with limitless resources, doesn’t mean that every other vaccine will be safe or without issues. 

Releasing one of these vaccines that could potentially prove dangerous to the public would be an unmitigated disaster to vaccination campaigns and the urgency has passed.

Pfizer and Moderna have offered us the opportunity to slow things down a little and apply more robust checks and balances on other vaccines. We should avail ourselves of the opportunity and be far more circumspect. 

This brings me to my final points. Reputation and resources. 

Both Pfizer and Moderna are massive companies that can not afford to fail. They have staked their reputations on the success of their products and this shouldn’t be overlooked. 

Failure on a global scale would be spectacular, and the results crippling for any company. 

Secondly, the fact that all America’s top tier politicians and healthcare workers have been targeted as first recipients for the vaccine speaks volumes to the manufacturer’s confidence in their products. While few tears would have been shed for the politicians, the healthcare industry matters. 

Kill off all America’s healthcare frontline and we’d really be up the proverbial creek hunting for a paddle. This reason alone would make me seriously consider the vaccine were I in your positions, troubled by uncertainty, rumors, and misinformation. Look at what is happening on the ground.

A final word for the US media

Now, more than ever, you need to avoid your clickbait headlines, particularly if it involves the use of the word vaccine. 

Show restraint and research topics thoroughly. Be circumspect in what you choose to publish. Your business of selling the early morning addition shouldn’t pose a threat to public health. That is something that can and will be regulated under a Biden administration.

The questions are endless. The speculation and unadulterated bullshit circulating on social media is unprecedented and all across America, daily deaths and infection rates from Covid keep rising. As we apparently no longer “trust science”, thanks to amateurs speculating online, legions of health and wellness quacks, and rogue doctors who’ve lost touch with reality, we need to look to other forms of support for the common vaccine. We need to examine what we know about vaccines and apply a little common sense.

1. Evidence-based proof

Frontline healthcare workers are currently receiving the Covid Pfizer vaccine across all American towns and cities. It’s a common-sense decision to first protect those that protect us. Dead doctors and nurses are of little use in a pandemic and they’ve been dying in record numbers. This strategy has also provided excellent proof-of-use for the vaccine doubters, which number, according to some research, around 50% of the American population.

Look ma, no hands. It’s an absolute and undeniable show of faith by the medical community in the science, research, and trials Pfizer has undertaken with their vaccine. Every vaccination photo taken, every vaccination video posted, helps strengthen the message across social media.

The Covid Vaccine is SAFE. Look, I’ve just been vaccinated with it.

Make no mistake, vaccines are at war with the anti-vaxers. The fact that these groups and individuals are publically excommunicated from their professions makes little difference. It is the digital age. People wear their shame like a badge of honor, they pin it to their profiles, and the public lap it up.

2. Consulting the numbers for evidence

Vaccines have been around for a while. They are undoubtedly the most administered medication across the globe. More vaccines are produced and used than any other form of medication. Think for a second how every child born will receive a whole course of vaccinations before they turn 2. In the last few decades, we have used hundreds of billions of vaccines. Billions, not millions.

These numbers tell us a few things we don’t need a science degree to figure out. I’ll list the obvious first and then we can examine each point below.

• Vaccines are one of the primary sources of income for pharmaceutical companies. Can’t argue this right? Number one seller = number one earner.
• Every medication has a few people that are going to react badly to it, some fatally. Our huge variances as humans make this unavoidable. We are unique and this causes issues with medicines. What works for me may potentially kill you. No other drug has been more exposed to this risk than vaccines.
• We know more about human responses to vaccines than any other drug. Why? Well, again, most used drug.
• You, yes you, were vaccinated repeatedly as a child and possibly as an adult? The fact you are able to complain and bitch about vaccine safety is a pretty clear indicator you survived. Repeatedly.

Now let’s examine these logic-based statements about global vaccine usage over the last few decades.

Big Pharma getting it right

Noe one can afford a faulty product distributed globally, particularly if that product could prove fatal. Pharma companies are no different and doing anything to threaten potential vaccine lines by releasing a dangerous vaccine is completely counterintuitive to running a successful business. It is the equivalent of selling a rifle with the barrel welded closed. Pointless and something only an idiot would consider. Pharmaceutical companies are not idiots.

DO NOT CONFUSE TRIALS with approved vaccines. Yes, there is a questionable ethic behind how some pharma companies test and trial their vaccines and other drugs. Denying this fact is counterproductive to rebuilding trust. Trials are mandatory to ascertain if a drug is safe. Sometimes things go spectacularly wrong. it happens. 

This is not however a discussion on the ethics of large pharma. It is about the safety of products that have successfully passed this trial phase. Approved vaccines that make it into the arm of almost every human on the planet. Poisoning your customers is something any company would rather avoid, particularly if you are dependent on them for more business. If you disagree with this point then I’d recommend you avoid going into business.

The luck of the draw

Every anti-vaxer has a list of websites that highlight alleged death and disease they associate with vaccines. Much of their data and evidence is highly questionable but as I said earlier, we aren’t here to bandy science about. We are here to establish safety by using common sense and logic.

Every vaccine has a properly trialed and established risk of use. For every million people, for argument sake, that take the vaccine, 2 will develop disease x, 6 will develop disease y and 10 might drop down dead from an allergic reaction. These are known, documented, and acceptable risks for this and other medications. 

There are also other risks that are highlighted as use expands over a period of time. The more people we expose, the more potential for little known reactions to become evident. If these adverse reactions exceed what is deemed acceptable by regulating agencies (the Food and Drug administration for instance) then the drug or vaccine is recalled. 

This almost never happens with vaccines as they are more rigorously tested than other forms of medicine. They are, therefore, far safer. If you happen to react badly to a vaccine, then you shouldn’t play cards, as you’ve been unlucky enough to have drawn that one in a million short straw. Keep in mind, there is no way of avoiding this. Somewhere, someone is going to react. That is a fact, but the odds are massively in your favor that it won’t be you.

You’re walking, talking proof that vaccines work

No small part of the reason you’ve survived into adulthood is the vaccine. Your body is riddled with a variety of different ones, as are the bodies of most other adults. The aggressive vaccination of babies and young children has saved millions of lives globally and virtually eradicated diseases that previously could very well have cut your life short.

For 99.9% of the world’s population, vaccines have been lifesaving. FACT. Why do you think diseases like polio, mumps, measles, and a host of other nasty bugs no longer bother us? Vaccines. Why do you think these diseases are again beginning to emerge in certain states? It’s because anti-vaxers refuse to have their children vaccinated. If you think this makes no difference to you, then you better think again.

How anti-vaxers threaten your life

Let’s take a little stroll down the path of not vaccinating children and see where it leads. Stay with me, as you had better believe it isn’t simply their children these groups are exposing to risk, but you as well. Your life could be forfeit simply because of misinformation and unscrupulous agents exploiting people for profit.

Adults are far more susceptible to serious complications from childhood diseases. Mumps in an adult can be life-threatening and leave you sterile. Not a problem, you say as the mumps virus is virtually extinct. 

Think again. Thanks to anti-vaxers, since 2006 the disease is back and thriving in the US. Many of those infected in these new outbreaks are fully vaccinated adults. Viruses mutate over time and if we allow new strains of old diseases to gain a foothold again in our societies, we face a massive health crisis. 

Secondary infections from catching these diseases are treated with antibiotics. Increased use of our limited range of antibiotics is leading to resistant strains of bacteria that pay no attention to antibiotics. Strains that you may catch and that may kill you. Resistant means what it says. We have no defense against these bacteria. 

So now you know. Doubt me if you like, but I can promise you now that the scenario outlined above is almost a best-case scenario if we continue to ignore simple logic and common sense. The choice is yours. Use logic to overcome the idiocy and disinformation littering the internet. Would governments risk killing off all their frontline medical staff by exposing them to a dangerous vaccine?

Vaccines work, they are 99.9% safe and we need to continue vaccinating ourselves and our children to allow science the time to develop new and novel ways of combatting viruses and new bacterial strains. 

Please vaccinate. Covid kills and if you are afraid of the vaccine and developing an allergic reaction, think of this. For fifteen minutes after you’ve been immunized, you will be in the company of trained medical personal. People who know how to deal with allergic reactions and who can potentially save your life. 

Avoid vaccination and you’re on your own with Covid. Covid may very well not kill you, but the odds are much, much higher of a covid infection putting you in an early grave, than you being killed by a vaccine. If I were a betting man, I’d pick the vaccine, every time.
