She sat across from me in the radiation oncology exam room, hands folded in her lap.

No phone.

No watch.

No distractions.

Just her presence — so quiet, it filled the room.

She had metastatic cancer, but that wasn’t what she came to talk about.

“I spent my whole life moving,” she said. “Rushing, fixing, solving. Even when I sat still, my mind didn’t stop. But cancer… cancer taught me something else.”

“It taught me how to be still.”

She didn’t say it with resignation. It felt like a victory.

Most people come into the clinic with questions about what to do.

They want a treatment plan, a supplement list, a way forward.

She came in with something simpler, and somehow, deeper — a way to be.

“I used to think stillness was laziness,” she told me.

“But now I think it’s wisdom. Sitting in the garden with my tea, letting my dog nap beside me.”

No music.

No news.

Just being there.

“That,” she said, “was the first time I really lived.”

Want more quiet insights from the exam room?
Follow me on Medium → https://medium.com/@drmichaelhunter

She wasn’t being poetic.

She was just telling the truth.

Stillness

Stillness is a challenging concept to sell in our culture.

We equate motion with progress.

We blur productivity and purpose.

We fill every space with noise.

But healing, aging, grieving, and loving — all require stillness.

I’ve seen patients search for answers in pills, scans, and data.

But sometimes the answer comes in silence.

A deep breath.

A quiet morning.

A patient who learned to stop chasing life long enough actually to feel it.

She asked me no questions.

She just said thank you.

And as she left, I realized I was the one who’d been given something.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply be still.

Final Thoughts

I’ve met thousands of patients.

But the ones who stay with me are rarely the ones who fought the hardest or read the most studies.

They’re the ones who discovered a truth we forget in our rush: That stillness isn’t the opposite of life.

“Can food really undo burnout?” a reader recently asked me.

It’s a brilliant question — practical, personal, and rooted in lived experience.

We’ve all been there: eating blueberries, sipping matcha, nibbling dark chocolate, hoping it’ll offset the chaos of our lives.

We’re told that foods like blueberries are miracle cures — that if we just eat clean enough, we can outrun stress.

But here’s what I’ve seen in practice:

You can’t eat your way out of chaos.

→ Why Everyone’s Brain Feels Broken Right Now — And What I Tell My Patients

Still, food matters. Deeply.

Let’s unpack what antioxidant-rich foods can do for a burned-out brain — and where their power ends.

(P.S. That “Let food be thy medicine” quote? Not really Hippocrates.)

What Are High-ORAC Foods, Anyway?

ORAC, short for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity measures how well a food can neutralize free radicals (unstable molecules that damage cells, accelerate aging, and promote inflammation).

Some of the highest-ORAC foods include:

Prunes, blueberries, kale, and spinach top the charts when it comes to antioxidant power per gram.

These are some of the most evidence-based foods that fight burnout by countering oxidative stress and inflammation.

Consuming these foods regularly can make your body more efficient at extinguishing the “metabolic fires” triggered by stress, poor sleep, and inflammation.

These foods have high ORAC scores, meaning they help your body neutralize oxidative stress. But they’re just one piece of the recovery puzzle.

So yes, these foods help.

But they’re not enough.

Stress, Sleep, and the Limits of Diet

Take a real-world example:

A 49-year-old entrepreneur came to me burned out.

She exercised.

Ate mostly plants. Drank matcha. Took magnesium.

Still exhausted. Irritable. Foggy.

Why?

She was sleeping five hours a night, answering emails at midnight, skipping meals, and never pausing.

Her nervous system was locked in a state of fight-or-flight.

And even the most antioxidant-rich foods won’t restore the parasympathetic state we need to digest, repair, and think clearly.

Nutrition supports healing, but it doesn’t initiate it when the system is overloaded.

Curious how patients actually recover from burnout? My ebook, What Dying Patients Taught Me About Living, shares what I’ve seen firsthand.
👉 [Get your copy here]

These foods support brain health — but only when life’s basic rhythms are in place.

What Antioxidants Can Do

So what can antioxidants do?

A nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich diet can help:

Lower CRP (a marker of inflammation)

Improve cognition under stress.

Stabilize mood via the gut-brain axis.

Protect mitochondria from oxidative stress.

Support neurogenesis (yes, new brain cell growth)

These are some of the most powerful antioxidant benefits for the brain — and they’re magnified when paired with rest and rhythm.

One 2023 study found that a Mediterranean-style, antioxidant-rich diet was linked to a lower risk of depression.

Antioxidants support brain and body — but only when sleep and rhythm come first.

Related: 10 Tiny Habits That Quiet Your Mind — Without Meditating

Another study showed that people who consumed more polyphenol-rich foods had better memory scores, regardless of their sleep quality.

The takeaway? Antioxidants can buffer the damage. But they can’t reset the machine.

What They Can’t Do

Let me be direct:

No number of blueberries can fix:

Poor sleep hygiene

Work addiction

Emotional suppression

Constant digital overload

Clean eating can quietly backfire — especially when it becomes a way to control life instead of nourish it.

Food is a foundation, not a fix.

What Actually Works (In Real Life)

Here’s what I tell patients when they’re doing all the “right” things — but still feel off:

1. Anchor meals to rhythm, not mood

Eat at consistent times daily. This stabilizes your gut clock and supports digestion.

2. Start the day with color

Aim for 3+ natural colors before noon: blueberries, spinach, turmeric, red pepper.

3. Pair food with ritual

Eat away from screens. Use real dishes. Go outside if you can. This activates your parasympathetic system.

4. Don’t supplement stress away

Magnesium, ashwagandha, resveratrol — all useful. But only after the basics are covered: sleep, movement, light, and breath.

5. Get morning light every day

Rhythm Over Rescue

Here’s the core truth:

Health isn’t about rescue. It’s about rhythm.

We chase the perfect food, supplement, or hack to undo imbalance.

But the body doesn’t crave intensity.

It craves consistency.

Yes, antioxidant-rich foods help.

But when food is paired with consistent rest, movement, morning light, connection, and meaning?

That’s when transformation happens.

A Series for the Questions That Matter

Reader questions shape how I practice medicine — and how I write.

If this one resonates, know this:

You’re not alone. Many of you are doing the right things, just in the wrong context.

You can eat perfectly and still feel off.

When food becomes a companion to healing, not a crutch, that’s when the real magic begins.

The food is just the beginning.

I’m a radiation oncologist, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this question: “Doc, how much can I drink before it really starts to raise my risk of cancer?”

It’s a common concern, and honestly, it’s tough to answer.

People want a clear number, a magic threshold, but it’s not simple.

The truth is that even small amounts of alcohol can increase your risk.

That’s right, even that glass of wine with dinner or that beer after work isn’t completely harmless.

Incumbent Vice Admiral Vivek Murthy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surgeon_General_of_the_United_States.

Dr. Vivek Murthy, The Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, has been emphasizing it, and I echo that warning.

Alcohol and Cancer

Researchers have associated alcohol with at least seven cancer types: mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, breast, liver, colon, and rectum.

In fact, in 2020 alone, over 740,000 cancer cases worldwide were attributed to alcohol consumption.

That’s a staggering number.

Even more concerning is that many people are unaware of this link.

A 2019 survey found that only 45 percent of Americans believe alcohol significantly impacts cancer risk. More on that finding in a bit.

Here’s the bottom line: the more you drink, especially regularly over time, the higher your risk.

Photo by Anthony DELANOIX on Unsplash

And this applies to all types of alcohol — beer, wine, and liquor.

I know this isn’t what people want to hear.

We all enjoy a drink occasionally, but it’s crucial to be aware of the risks and make informed choices.

Even Small Alcohol Amounts Increase Cancer Risk

Even small amounts of alcohol can increase your cancer risk.

What’s a standard drink? A standard drink has 14 grams of alcohol, like a 5-ounce glass of wine, a 12-ounce beer, or a 1.5-ounce shot of liquor.

Less than one drink a week still has risks. Research shows that even this small amount can increase your risk of certain cancers.

Lifetime risk: For women who have less than one drink a week, about 17 out of 100 will develop an alcohol-related cancer in their lifetime. This number includes cancers like breast cancer (about 11 out of 100 women), which alcohol’s effect on estrogen levels can influence. Men who have less than one alcoholic drink per week have about a 1 in 10 chance of developing alcohol-related cancer during their lifetime.

Any Alcohol Amount or Type Increases Cancer Risk

Any amount of alcohol consumption increases cancer risk.

The idea that a drink a day is good for you is outdated.

Photo by Red Zeppelin on Unsplash

Current research shows that even one alcoholic beverage weekly increases your health risks.

What About One Drink Per Day?

Many of my Seattle friends and patients consume at least one standard drink daily.

You heard the risk increase for less than one alcoholic beverage per week.

What about daily?

Again, from the U.S. Surgeon General’s report:

For women, this means a 19 percent lifetime risk of developing an alcohol-related cancer.

For men, it means an 11 percent lifetime risk of developing an alcohol-related cancer.

Which Cancers Are Associated with Alcohol?

Alcohol consumption increases the risk of at least seven cancer types:

Mouth

Throat

Voicebox

Esophagus

Breast

Liver

Colorectal

I’d like to make this information more practical by giving the absolute (rather than relative) risk increases for two drinks daily:

Five more women out of 100 will develop cancer secondary to drinking two alcoholic beverages daily. Three additional men out of 100 will develop cancer.

If you consume more than four drinks daily, you can add four more cancers to the list: Liver, stomach, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Less Than Half of Americans Are Knowledgeable

This pronouncement from Dr. Murthy disturbs me:

Less than one-half of Americans are aware that alcohol consumption increases cancer risk.

Here are the specifics:

Problems With My Analysis

It’s time for me to criticize Dr. Murthy’s analysis of the alcohol data.

The Surgeon General put out advice saying that even moderate drinking is linked to a series of cancers.

He implicates at least seven cancers.

Meta-analyses form the basis for much of my thinking.

Think of a meta-analysis as making a juice blend.

The quality of the juice depends entirely on the fruits you add.

Because alcohol consumption is self-reported, there are limitations:

Accuracy: People might not accurately remember or report how much they drink.

Bias: Reporting habits could differ based on race, socioeconomic status, and education level.

“Non-drinker” category: The reasons people don’t drink vary widely, including health issues, past alcohol problems, or medical advice.

How I Approach Habits

I tend to consider several endpoints when I think about habits that may impact my health, including the following:

What is my projected life expectancy? If it is six months, I might do things I wouldn’t do if I had decades.

How well will I live (morbidity/ disability)? My quality of life (my health span) is enormously important.

How much joy does the activity spark?

What is the impact on those around me? If I were mean to others after drinking, it would (I hope) greatly influence my consumption.

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, has some daily habits that contributed to his success.

I love listening to Phelps chat as I walk on my treadmill.

The swimmer joins IFit trainer John Peel in Hawaii and shares some wisdom.

Today, I will share two daily habits of Olympian Michael Phelps that you should steal, even if you are not hitting the swimming pool.

1. Visualization

Phelps has intense visualization practices.

He visualizes winning races.

The swimmer also visualizes overcoming obstacles.

Mentally rehearsing prepares him to stay focused under competition pressure.

Stealing Phelps’ Visualization Techniques

You can use visualization.

For example, before a big meeting or a challenging task.

Close your eyes, and visualize yourself achieving success.

See yourself navigating challenges with ease and achieving your goals.

2. Prioritize Rest, Recovery, and Sleep

In his competition years, Phelps prioritized rest and recovery.

“I think sleeping is — no matter if I am training or I’m a retired athlete — a crucial part of my everyday life.”

Did you know that he slept in an altitude chamber to simulate training at a higher altitude (and maximizing his oxygen utilization)?

Olympian Michael Phelps Shares His Secret to a Good Night’s Sleep

www.travelandleisure.com

Stealing Phelps’ Rest Techniques

While you may not have an altitude chamber in your bedroom, you can modify some of Pelps’ approaches to rest:

Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.

Keep your bedroom cool and dark.

Avoid screen time in an hour or two before bedtime.

Limit your alcohol consumption.

Final Thoughts

No disrespect, but I doubt you will achieve Michael Phelps-level Olympic success.

However, you can improve your focus, mental resilience, and health by adopting two of his daily habits.

What’s your strategy?

My hospital recently reintroduced a mandate that its healthcare providers wear paper surgical masks.

As a scientist, I question the efficacy of paper surgical masks in preventing the transmission of COVID-19, as my hospital reintroduced a mandate for healthcare providers to wear them.

Although many debate the effectiveness of paper masks, I am more interested in the evidence supporting wearing one rather than the politics surrounding masking.

Mixed Feelings

I remember wearing a paper surgical mask during a particularly busy shift at the hospital last winter.

As I moved from one patient’s room to another, I couldn’t help but notice the discomfort caused by the mask’s straps constantly tugging at my ears.

Despite the inconvenience, I also couldn’t ignore the sense of protection and responsibility that came with wearing it.

I work in cancer medicine, after all.

Photo by engin akyurt on Unsplash

It’s a strange juxtaposition — the physical discomfort versus the mental reassurance.

Moreover, my patients prefer to see my face.

Moments like these make me reflect on the true effectiveness of these masks and whether they are truly making a difference in preventing the transmission of viruses.

Overview

While we adopted widespread mask use as a public health measure, the evidence supporting their effectiveness remains contested.

Observational studies (and even some randomized controlled trials) suggest a benefit, but there is no high-level, conclusive evidence that masks reduce COVID-19 transmission.

You may be surprised to hear this doctor admit that.

Photo by Mika Baumeister on Unsplash

Today, I want to examine a recent study that hails the effectiveness of masking.

The big reveal: We need more rigorous investigations to determine the precise role of paper surgical masks in mitigating the spread of the virus.

A New Study

Atle Freithem and colleagues report the results of a pragmatic randomized control trial in the British Medical Journal:

Personal protective effect of wearing surgical face masks in public spaces.

The take-home message is this:

Wearing a surgical mask for two weeks during the winter of 2023 reduced the spread of self-reported viral illness.

This research proves that paper masks work, right?

Study Details

Purpose: This study aimed to see if wearing a surgical mask in public places like stores, streets, and public transport for two weeks could protect people from getting sick with respiratory infections like colds or the flu.

How the study worked: Researchers randomly divided almost 4,700 adults in Norway into two groups. They told one group of participants to wear surgical masks in public for two weeks while asking the other group not to.

Photo by Viktor Forgacs on Unsplash

What researchers examined: The scientists were mainly interested in whether people got sick with respiratory infections. They also looked at whether people reported getting COVID-19 or had it confirmed by a doctor.

Important note: The investigators did not tell subjects to wear masks at home or work, only when in public.

Study Results

Here are the study results:

Over the study period, about 9 percent of those who wore masks reported cold or flu-like symptoms, compared to 12 percent of those who didn’t.

This finding suggests that wearing masks might slightly lower your chances of contracting a respiratory infection.

My Take

First, kudos to the researchers for completing a practical, randomized clinical trial evaluating paper mask effectiveness.

We can do randomized clinical trials in the COVID-19 realm.

Second, the study does not prove that paper masks reduce COVID-19 transmission.

Many people believe masks are effective, and this study didn’t use a placebo or fake mask to account for that belief.

The results may reflect that people feel better because they wear a mask rather than a mask that prevents illness.

We Need Studies With Objective Measures

I hope we get a study that uses objective measures of infection.

I wish the authors had used regular virus tests or blood tests checking for COVID-19 antibodies.

And mandated mask wearing for more than a couple of weeks.

Photo by engin akyurt on Unsplash

The study, as conducted, tells us that people wearing masks reported fewer illnesses, not that they were actually sick less often or felt better overall.

While the study didn’t find a benefit in confirmed COVID-19 cases, it might not have been large enough to detect a small difference.

Bottom Line

This study does not prove masks reduce COVID-19 transmission; the study’s primary endpoint was self-reported illness.

After so much trumpeting of the value of paper masks to reduce COVID-19 contagiousness, we still need high-level evidence to convince me.

Per my hospital’s mandate, I will continue to don my paper mask faithfully in designated places in my workplace.

But am I better off donning a mask year after year for a virus that has diminished in lethality for healthy individuals like me?

If I had a big upcoming event, I would wear an N-95 mask.

Many counterfeit N-95 and K-95 masks are out there, and many don’t fit them properly.

But that is another story.

Do you regularly wear a paper surgical mask? What motivates you to do so?

2015, my world shifted when I lost my father to a stroke at the age of 85. I vividly recall a conversation with his neurologists about the risks of strong blood thinners (anticoagulants) for stroke prevention, particularly considering the potential for bleeding complications.

Back then, this felt like the only approach.

My father decided that the potential benefits of anticoagulation were not worth the risks.

But I always wondered: Had my brilliant father chosen poorly?

Photo by Javier Allegue Barros on Unsplash

Fast forward to today, and two recent studies, NOAH-AFNET 6 and ARTESiA, are shaking things up in stroke management.

These studies are re-evaluating the use of anticoagulants for stroke prevention in a specific patient group.

This new research sparked my curiosity.

Do the new findings vindicate my father’s decision? Or because he had a first stroke with associated symptoms, is his case different?

More importantly, could they change how we treat individuals suffering a stroke moving forward?

My Goals

In this article, I’ll delve into the NOAH-AFNET 6 and ARTESiA studies, explore their potential impact on stroke treatment, and discuss what these findings might mean for the future.

I’ll end with some ways you can drop your stroke risk.

Photo by Diego PH on Unsplash

Blood Thinners to Prevent a Second Stroke

Both NOAH-AFNET 6 and ARTESiA were large-scale, randomized clinical trials designed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of anticoagulant blood thinning or clot-preventing) therapy compared to standard treatment (aspirin or placebo) for stroke prevention.

The studies focused on a specific group of patients: those with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) detected by implanted cardiac devices.

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

www.stroke.org.

These TIAs, often referred to as “mini-strokes,” are brief episodes of neurological dysfunction that typically last less than an hour and leave no lasting damage.

However, they serve as a warning sign for potential future strokes.

Here is where my dad’s case differs. Doctors diagnosed my father’s stroke because of his symptoms.

Photo by National Cancer Institute on Unsplash

In contrast, in these studies, doctors identified the strokes or TIAs through implanted cardiac devices that continuously monitor heart rhythm.

This approach allowed researchers to identify a subgroup of patients who might have experienced these events without exhibiting outward symptoms, potentially putting them at a higher risk of future strokes.

Study Results: Balancing Risks and Benefits

When analyzed using a meta-analysis approach, NOAH-AFNET 6 and ARTESiA findings revealed some intriguing results.

The studies demonstrated this:

For patients with a history of device-detected stroke or TIA, using blood thinners (specifically edoxaban and apixaban in these studies) reduced the risk of ischemic stroke (strokes caused by blood clots blocking blood flow to the brain) compared to aspirin or placebo.

However, the studies also highlighted a crucial trade-off.

While these drugs reduced ischemic stroke risk, there was a corresponding increase in the risk of major bleeding events associated with blood thinners.

Let’s explore how many people we would have to treat to see a benefit from blood thinning drugs.

A Personalized Approach on the Horizon?

The findings from NOAH-AFNET 6 and ARTESiA represent a significant shift in stroke prevention strategies.

Traditionally, the risk of bleeding complications often outweighed the potential benefits of blood thinners in stroke patients.

Thus, my father declined anticoagulants.

However, these studies suggest that the balance might tip favor anticoagulation for a specific subgroup with device-detected stroke or TIA.

Breaking Down the Numbers

Taya Glotzer, MD, an electrophysiologist at the Hackensack University Medical Center (New Jersey, USA), highlights the relatively small reduction in stroke risk observed in both studies.

Benefits Are Small

Dr. Taya Glotzer, an electrophysiologist at Hackensack University Medical Center, emphasizes that these reductions wouldn’t meet the “class 1 recommendation” criteria for blood thinners, which typically require a 1–2% annual stroke reduction.

However, she does acknowledge a positive takeaway: the studies demonstrate a “very, very low” stroke rate in patients with a history of stroke.

My Take

These studies offer valuable insights, but we should exercise caution.

While blood thinners might be beneficial for some stroke patients with implanted cardiac devices, the reduced stroke risk comes with an increased risk of bleeding.

More research is needed to determine the optimal approach for this specific patient population.

The recent research findings pave the way for a more personalized approach to stroke prevention.

By considering factors like the type of stroke, underlying risk factors, and implanted cardiac devices, doctors can have a more nuanced conversation with patients about anticoagulant therapy’s potential benefits and risks.

This comprehensive approach can empower patients to make informed decisions about their stroke prevention plan.

A clot in a blood vessel. Adobe Stock Photos.

However, it’s important to remember that these studies are just the beginning.

More research is needed to fully understand the long-term implications of blood thinners in this patient population and further refine treatment strategies.

Perhaps, by exploring this new landscape, we can honor the memory of those lost and pave the way for better treatment options for those facing stroke.

Take Action

Here are some steps you can take to drop your stroke risk:

Keep your cholesterol and blood pressure in the normal range

Don’t smoke

Keep your glucose (blood sugar) in the normal range

If you have heart disease, get treatment

Maintain a healthy weight

Be active

Eat a balanced diet.

Taking these steps can also help lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Summary

While blood thinners reduce the risk of ischemic stroke, they also increase the risk of major bleeding events.

Before 2024, stroke prevention felt like a clear-cut decision — a binary choice between anticoagulation and not.

Now, we find ourselves in a complex grey zone, carefully weighing the risk of stroke against the potential for bleeding complications with blood thinners. This shift in our understanding requires a more nuanced approach to stroke treatment.

But then I saw scary headlines proclaiming that the sweetener xylitol — in the gum that I am chewing as I write — is linked to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and early death.

Here’s CNN:

A recent study throws a wrench into the idea that sugar alcohols like xylitol and erythritol are universally healthy, natural sugar substitutes.

Before discussing the research findings, let’s briefly examine xylitol.

Sugar-Free Candy, Gum, Protein Bars & More

True story: I chewed on Xylitol-containing gum as I spied the striking headlines.

For years, xylitol has been a shining star in the sugar-free world.

Xylitol is touted for its low-calorie sweetness and dental benefits. You can find it in everything from sugar-free candy to gum to toothpaste.

New Study on Xylitol

But a new study throws a curveball . Could this seemingly healthy sweetener be linked to a higher risk of heart attack, stroke, and even death?

Hold off on tossing your sugar-free stash just yet.

This research follows a multi-step approach:

Large-scale analysis (discovery cohort): Researchers began by examining blood samples from over 1,100 people undergoing heart evaluations. They were looking for interesting patterns related to how the body processes xylitol.

Confirmation study (validation cohort): The investigators then used a more precise technique to confirm the initial findings in a separate group of over 2,100 people.

Detailed lab studies: The researchers then conducted experiments using human blood components and animal models to understand better how xylitol might affect blood clotting.

Direct impact study: Finally, a small group of healthy volunteers consumed xylitol to assess its effects on their blood clotting function directly.

This multi-pronged approach helped the scientists understand how xylitol interacts with the body and its potential impact on heart health.

Photo by Girl with a red hat on Unsplash

Human Study Findings

This research explores a potential link between xylitol, a common sugar substitute, and heart health.

Step 1: Finding a Clue: The study began by analyzing large groups of people’s blood (discovery cohort). They found that higher levels of a substance like xylitol seemed to be associated with an increased risk of heart problems over three years (major adverse cardiovascular events or MACE).

Step 2: Confirming the Suspect: Next, they used a more precise method (stable isotope dilution) to confirm it was specifically xylitol, not similar molecules, linked to the increased risk (validation cohort).

Step 3: Digging Deeper: Scientists then conducted lab experiments (mechanistic studies) to understand how xylitol might influence the body. They found that xylitol, at levels typically seen in the bloodstream after consumption, increased activity in cells involved in blood clotting. This phenomenon could potentially lead to a higher risk of blood clots forming.

Step 4: Direct Test: Finally, they gave healthy volunteers a xylitol-sweetened drink and observed a rise in their blood levels and increased activity in those same clotting cells.

What Does All of This Mean?

This study suggests a possible link between xylitol and an increased risk of heart problems.

However, it’s important to note that this is a single study; more research is needed to confirm these findings.

Photo by American Heritage Chocolate on Unsplash

It’s also important to remember that correlation doesn’t necessarily equal causation.

Just because high xylitol levels are linked with increased risk doesn’t necessarily mean xylitol itself caused the problem.

They can help you interpret this research in light of your health situation.

Xylitol may not be benign.

Conclusions

In conclusion, the study on xylitol sheds light on a potential link between this common sugar substitute and an increased risk of heart problems.

However, it’s important to approach these findings cautiously, as further research is needed to confirm the results.

As more research emerges, weighing the benefits of xylitol against its potential risks will be important, especially in individual health situations.

One more thing

Xylitol alert! This sweetener can be deadly for dogs.

Here’s a breakdown of the dangers:

Rapid Blood Sugar Drop: Xylitol is processed differently by dogs than humans. It can cause a quick and severe drop in blood sugar levels.

Symptoms: This drop can lead to vomiting, weakness, tremors, seizures, and even coma.

Fast Action Needed: Quickly acting is crucial if you think your dog has ingested xylitol. Contact your veterinarian or animal poison control immediately: https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control.

Remember: Keep Xylitol products out of your dog’s reach. These products include sugar-free gum, candy, baked goods, peanut butter, some medications, and other products that might contain it.

IN AN ERA MARKED BY TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT and convenience, an inconspicuous threat silently infiltrates our daily lives: microplastics.

I have begun to worry about these minuscule particles.

Photo by Adrian Infernus on Unsplash

Recent research findings caught my eye. Did you know that boiling tap water effectively removes 90 percent of microplastics?

Today, I will explore the problem of environmental microplastics before turning to this new finding.

The “plastic age.”

They permeate the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil beneath our feet and have emerged as an omnipresent concern.

Their pervasive presence in global drinking water and food supplies raises alarming questions.

How do microplastics influence the environment and our health?

Photo by Brian Yurasits on Unsplash

As we navigate this landscape of microscopic pollutants, unraveling the intricate web of implications surrounding microplastics and contemplating sustainable solutions for a healthier future is imperative.

Some researchers even call this the “Plastic Age.”

My concern

Plastic is everywhere in our oceans and Great Lakes, making it the most common type of trash floating around.

This plastic comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The National Ocean Services explains that when it’s smaller than five millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser), we call it “microplastics.”

A groundbreaking study recently shook me.

Scientists reported that the bottled water you can buy at the store could have 10 to 100 times more small bits of plastic than we previously thought . These tiny particles are so small you can’t see them with a regular microscope.

Photo by Erda Estremera on Unsplash

One liter, 240,000 tiny particles

In simpler terms, researchers discovered this:

One liter of water, about the same as two regular-sized bottled waters, contains around 240,000 tiny plastic pieces.

These plastic bits come from seven different types of plastics. Most of them, about 90%, are what we call “nanoplastics,” which are incredibly small.

The rest are “microplastics,” which are a bit bigger but still tiny.

Into the lungs and gut

At 1,000th the average width of a human hair, nanoplastics are so tiny they can migrate through the tissues of the digestive tract or lungs into the bloodstream, distributing potentially harmful synthetic chemicals throughout the body and into cells, experts say.

The tiny plastic particles can sneak into individual cells and tissues in our major organs, causing potential disruptions in how our cells work.

Photo by Maxim Tajer on Unsplash

They also bring along harmful chemicals like bisphenols, phthalates, flame retardants, and PFAS, which are known for interfering with our hormones, among other things.

When plastics get inside us, they release these chemicals, and because our bodies are warmer than the environment, these chemicals easily move from the plastic into our bodies.

It’s like plastic is carrying these potentially harmful substances right into us.

Microplastic perils

According to a recent report by the World Health Organization, microplastics have been found in drinking water sources worldwide, including bottled and tap water.

These tiny particles, smaller than five millimeters, seriously threaten human health and the environment.

Ingesting microplastics can lead to a range of health problems, including reproductive issues, developmental problems, and even cancer.

Microplastics and marine life

Furthermore, researchers have discovered microplastics in marine life, with studies showing that fish and other seafood consumed by humans contain microplastics.

Photo by Matt Alaniz on Unsplash

This finding means that even if we reduce our exposure to microplastics, we may still consume them indirectly through our food sources.

The impact of microplastics on the environment is also significant, as they can harm marine life and accumulate in ecosystems, leading to long-term environmental damage.

Boiling water removes microplastics.

A new study discovered this remarkable fact:

If you boil and filter tap water using everyday tools, similar to what you’d use for making tea or coffee, you can slash 90 percent of those super tiny plastic particles called nano- and microplastics.

To test this, scientists added these small plastic bits to tap water from Guangzhou (China) and boiled each sample for five minutes.

Study details

The boiling process caused the minerals in the tap water to form crystal structures of calcium carbonate, which acted like a shield, trapping the plastic particles and greatly lowering their amount.

According to Prof. Eddy Zeng, one of the researchers involved in the study, these tiny plastic particles could accumulate over time.

Photo by Devin Avery on Unsplash

However, to get rid of any leftover particles that have been trapped, you can pour the water through a coffee filter.

This step helps to scrub away and remove any remaining plastic particles that might be encrusted in the crystal structures formed during the boiling process.

Limiting your microplastic exposure

Using a glass or stainless steel pot is best if you plan to boil your water to eliminate microplastics.

Healthline provides this guidance:

After boiling for around five minutes, let the water cool without stirring, as this helps the tiny plastic particles bind to the calcium and settle at the bottom of the pot. Once they’ve settled, you can filter or scoop them away.

However, it’s essential to know that boiling water won’t solve the microplastic issue completely.

Other ways to reduce your microplastic exposure

There are other sources of exposure we encounter regularly.

Photo by Padraig Treanor on Unsplash

To reduce exposure, I try to avoid single-use plastic packaging, like bottled water, plastic utensils, and cooking products, and refrain from putting plastic containers in the dishwasher or microwave.

Regularly using these items can release plastic particles or chemicals, contributing to the problem.

My thoughts

This simple boiling-water strategy can “decontaminate” nano/microplastics (NMPs) from household tap water.

The approach has the potential to harmlessly alleviate human intake of nano/microplastics through water consumption.

Moreover, we can each improve the planet by avoiding single-use plastic packaging.

Increasing evidence indicates that plastics may gather in the body, leading to issues such as oxidative stress, inflammation, insulin resistance, problems with gut health, and potential liver issues.

I look forward to writing more about the absolute health risks of microplastics.

I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN DOING 30-MINUTE INDOOR WALKING workouts. I want to share why it’s perfect, especially during the holiday season. Skip the sleigh ride: My festive fix with a 30-minute walking workout.

Walking is simple, at least for most of us. But it can do wonders for your mind and body.

I usually enjoy a quick stroll in my local park or around the hospital’s neighborhood to loosen up my joints and clear my head.

But let’s face it: when winter hits and the days get shorter, outdoor walks become a bit tricky.

That’s when I decided to find a way to keep walking indoors and stumbled upon a workout routine ideal for the holidays, including when traveling.

Walking Goal: 4,000 Steps in 30 Minutes

I set a goal for myself — 4,000 steps in just 30 minutes.

Photo by Tareq Ismail on Unsplash

Why? Recent research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology showed this remarkable finding:

Walking around 3,867 steps can significantly lower early mortality risk.

Who would have thought, right? Forget the old myth of 10,000 steps; it’s not a one-size-fits-all anymore.

My Traditional Approach

Historically, treadmill walking has been my go-to activity to form a base for my physical activity.

I love that 30 minutes of ambulating promotes mental well-being while advancing my physical health.

“Her pleasure in the walk must arise from the exercise and the day, from the view of the last smiles of the year upon the tawny leaves and withered hedges, and from repeating to herself some few of the thousand poetical descriptions extant of autumn — that season of peculiar and inexhaustible influence on the mind of taste and tenderness — that season which has drawn from every poet worthy of being read some attempt at description, or some lines of feeling.” ― Jane Austen, Persuasion.

Walking Benefits

Here’s a reminder of some of the upsides to simply walking:

Reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. Walking is a cardiovascular physical activity; movement increases my heart rate, blood flow, and blood pressure. According to Mayo Clinic (USA) experts, regular physical activity can lower high blood pressure by 5 to 8 mm Hg.

Better energy. Walking helps boost my energy levels by releasing hormones such as endorphins and delivering oxygen throughout my body.

Improved lung fitness.

Better control of chronic health conditions (including high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, and joint/muscle stiffness)

Stronger bones and improved balance.

Better mental health.

Lower risk of premature death. A large study combining data from 196 research projects (involving over 30 million adults) examined how different exercise levels affect early death chances. People who did at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly had a nearly one-third (31 percent) lower risk of dying early than those who didn’t. Even if someone exercised only half of that, they still had a nearly one-quarter (23 percent) lower risk of early death.

An Alternative Way (By Olivia Lawson)

I prefer a more traditional approach to walking. For me, the ideal is walking outside, among trees.

Alternatively, I use an indoor treadmill. Mine is a streaming fitness service that allows me to stream high-quality, gym-style workouts directly to my treadmill or exercise bicycle.

I recently discovered a walking routine on YouTube by Olivia Lawson. She is a certified fitness coach with 135,000 followers.

Her workout offers the promise of 5,000 steps in 34 minutes. Try it, and you will do exercises targeting calories, abs, and raising the heart rate.

If you try this indoor walking workout, please return and share your thoughts in the comment section.

I Build Physical Activity Into My Life

Can’t walk for 30 minutes at a time?

Here’s a nice alternative: Try regular small chunks (10 minutes) of walking thrice daily. You can gradually build up to longer sessions.

Of course. If you want to lose weight, you must do more than 30 minutes daily.

I build physical activity into my daily life. This practice allows me to maintain a healthy weight. Here are some of my favorites:

I take the stairs instead of the elevator.

I regularly walk to local shops.

I use my lunchtime to take a short walk.

I prioritize physical activity.

Skip the Sleigh Ride: My Festive Fitness Fix with a 30-Minute Walking Workout.

An indoor walking workout is suitable for all fitness levels and much more rewarding than it might sound.

It’s a fun way to get moving, especially during the holidays, and you don’t even need to leave the house.

Treadmill, video, or other. You got this.

So, if you’re looking for a new morning routine in the New Year, give a walking workout a shot. It’s a free and fantastic way to kickstart your day.

I hope you all have a blast trying it out! Stay fit, and happy holidays!

ACTOR RICHARD ROUNDTREE, the iconic private detective from the 1970s action film “Shaft,” is dead at 81. As a doctor who treats individuals with cancer, I want to explore what you should know about the man and his cancer.

I remember the movie’s theme song, written and performed by Isaac Hayes. The song won the 1972 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Roundtree recently died from pancreatic cancer. While he had many leading roles, I am most impressed with his role in shining a spotlight on male breast cancer.

The actor received a breast cancer diagnosis in 1993. Before we talk about that, let’s step back in time to visit his film career.

Action Hero Roundtree

Roundtree is considered by many to be the first Black American action hero.

With his role as the street-smart John Shaft character in the Gordon Parks-directed film in 1971, Roundtree became a leading actor in the blaxploitation genre.

Remarkably, the role was his first feature film appearance after beginning his career as a model.

Theatrical release poster. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaft_(1971_film).

If you want a modern take on Shaft, I recommend Roundtree’s reprisal of the role in the 2000 Shaft film. Samuel L. Jackson takes the lead role, and Roundtree appears as his uncle.

One more thing: Both appeared again in the same roles in the 2019 film starring Jessie T. Usher.

Blaxploitation Films

Roundtree’s “Shaft” changed how those in Hollywood thought about Black movies.

The film industry had historically failed to consider Black actors — especially for leading roles — in projects at the time. The industry aimed the blaxploitation films primarily at African-American audiences.

Roundtree On His Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Speaking with People Magazine, Roundtree admitted that he had some hypochondriac tendencies.

In 1993, after palpating a breast lump, he immediately saw his doctor. Here is Richard’s initial reaction:

“When the doctor said breast cancer, I thought he was questioning my manhood.”

Photo by JAFAR AHMED on Unsplash

Roundtree had a modified radical mastectomy. Surgeons removed his breast and underarm (axillary) lymph nodes. He then had six months of challenging chemotherapy.

He Initially Hid His Diagnosis

For years, Roundtree hid his breast cancer diagnosis. He feared disclosure would end his acting career.

Before a production hires an actor for a film, the individual must pass a physical exam so the producing studio can get insurance to ensure the studio will complete the film on time.

To continue working, Roundtree had to sometimes lie about his health.

Listen to him speaking about the topic after he took a tole as a bare-knuckle fighter on TV’s Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman — a part calling him to go shirtless.

“I thought, How am I going to get around this? He quickly devised a way to conceal the large scar across his chest. “Since we were shooting early in the morning and it was cold at that time of year, I convinced them to let me wear an undershirt for warmth.”

But Roundtree Later Became More Open

For a long while, he kept his breast cancer diagnosis secret. But later, he told everyone about it.

I tell everyone now. I feel that it’s very important that people who are recognizable in the universe, at whatever level, say that they’ve gone through this, and it’s okay.”

Men Get Breast Cancer, Too

Men have breast tissue, just like women. The difference is in the volume of tissue they have.

While breast cancer is relatively rare in men, it is important to know if you have a higher risk.

Photo by Hunters Race on Unsplash

Awareness is especially important, given that men do not get regular breast cancer screening (such as mammograms).

Male Breast Cancer Risk Factors

Male breast cancer risk factors include the following:

Age. Whether you’re a man or a woman, breast cancer risk rises with age. The average age for a man to get diagnosed is 68. However, breast cancer can occur at any age.

Genes. If your father, brother, or other close relatives had breast cancer, you may also be at risk. Certain genes increase your likelihood of getting this cancer — including the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

These genes code for proteins that prevent breast cells from growing out of control. Both men and women who inherit the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations are at increased risk for breast cancer.

For males, the lifetime breast cancer risk is about one percent if you have the BRCA1 gene and six percent if you have the BRCA2 gene.

Weight gain: Fat tissue releases the hormone estrogen. Estrogen stimulates breast cancer growth. The more overweight you are, the more estrogen you produce.

Hormone exposure: You’re at higher risk for breast cancer if you take hormone-based drugs (for instance, for prostate cancer treatment) or if you had exposure to estrogen through pesticides or other products.

Klinefelter syndrome: This condition causes men to be born with an extra copy of the X chromosome. Normally, men have one X and one Y chromosome (XY). In Klinefelter syndrome, they have two copies of the X chromosome in addition to the Y chromosome (XXY).

Men with Klinefelter syndrome have smaller than normal testicles. They create less testosterone and more estrogen than usual. Men with Klinefelter syndrome are at higher risk of getting breast cancer.

Heavy alcohol use: Drinking a lot of alcohol can cause your blood estrogen levels to rise.

Liver disease: Cirrhosis and other liver diseases can lower the amount of male hormones and increase estrogen in your body.

Surgery to your testicles: Testicle damage can increase breast cancer risk.

Radiation exposure: Radiation (for example, to the chest as a part of treatment for childhood cancer) increases breast cancer risk.

Roundtree Dies of Pancreas Cancer

But Roundtree’s story has another important cancer chapter.

He recently died at 81.

Roundtree’s longtime manager, Patrick McMinn, explains that the actor had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died at his home in Los Angeles (USA) on October 24, 2023.

Photo by Sangharsh Lohakare on Unsplash

I suspect Mr. Roundtree had a BRCA mutation. Those with these genetic changes have an increased risk of several cancers, including breast and pancreas.

Columbia University (USA) researchers at The Pancreas Center reported this in 2014:

Ten percent of pancreatic cancers in our center are related to BRCA 1 and 2 mutations. Other researchers have found the link between pancreatic cancer and BRCA2 mutations to be as high as 19 percent.

About one in 400 individuals in the general population may test positive for a BRCA1 or 2 gene mutation.

Such genetic changes are associated with five to 10 percent of all breast cancers. BRCA mutations are linked to half of all hereditary breast cancers.

Some Takeaway Messages

The Executive Director of the Pancreas Center at Columbia University, Dr. John Chabot, has this to say:

“We recommend that patients who have pancreatic cancer and are identified as BRCA-positive should also be screened for ovarian and breast cancer and vice versa.”

There are some ways to reduce your chances of getting breast cancer.

Some risks for male breast cancer — like family history and age — are out of your control. But there are some risk factors you can control. Healthline has these suggestions:

Keep your weight within a healthy range. Obesity can shift the hormone balance in your body, making you more likely to get breast cancer. If you’re overweight, talk to your doctor and a dietitian about changing your eating and exercise plans.

Exercise on most days of the week. A lack of physical activity can alter your hormone levels, making you more susceptible to cancer.

Avoid or limit alcohol. Having excessive alcohol is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in women. Even though the link isn’t as clear in men, it’s still worth cutting back.

If male breast cancer runs in your family, you may not be able to prevent it. However, you can catch it early by knowing your risk. Consider talking to a genetic counselor about getting tested for BRCA1, BRCA2, and other genes.

Roundtree’s death from pancreatic cancer is a reminder that cancer is a complex disease that can affect anyone. It is important to get regular checkups and screenings and to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer.
